Rain-slicked streets and a glowing dome set this stereograph of the United States Capitol apart from the daytime views that usually show the building. Keystone View Company, a firm that sold stereo cards for parlor viewers, produced scenes like this in the late 1920s, when two slightly offset photographs seen through a hand viewer created a sense of depth. The Capitol's cast-iron dome, completed in the 1860s and topped by the bronze Statue of Freedom, was a favorite subject for photographers. The date of about October 27, 1928 comes from an old caption card and has not been fully verified.
