Baldwin, Wisconsin, a small village in St. Croix County, was photographed in 1912, a few decades after the great pine lumber era in the St. Croix valley had peaked and begun to fade. Local life in that period revolved around farming, dairying, and the railroad that connected village grain, livestock, and goods to larger markets in the Twin Cities and beyond. Many residents were farm families or tradespeople who served the surrounding countryside, and the village's streets, churches, and businesses reflected a community still shaping itself after the timber boom. Wisconsin in 1912 was also in the middle of the Progressive Era, and towns like Baldwin were absorbing new ideas about schools, roads, and local government alongside the older rhythms of seasonal work.
