Hammond, a small village in St. Croix County in western Wisconsin, was in 1912 a farming community shaped by the lumber trade that had long defined the St. Croix Valley. By the early 1900s the great white pine stands upriver had largely been cut, so local families turned to dairying, grain, and hay, selling milk and produce to nearby towns and the Twin Cities. Church, school, the general store, and fraternal lodges anchored daily life, and neighbors gathered there for meetings, suppers, and Fourth of July celebrations. The decade also brought changes to rural Wisconsin, including cooperative creameries and better roads, which made the seasonal rhythms of village life easier to sustain.
