Loyal, Wisconsin, in 1912 was a small farm town in Clark County, in the cut-over country of north-central Wisconsin. Logging had stripped much of the surrounding pine forest over the previous generation, and families were turning to cleared land for dairy herds, grain, and hay. Cheese and butter were central to the county's farm economy, and the town's streets and business blocks served the farmers who drove or rode in to buy supplies, sell produce, and transact business on market days. Life revolved around churches, schools, lodges, and the railroad depot, where mail and goods arrived and where neighbors met. Loyal was one of many modest communities in the region whose fortunes rose and fell with lumber and agriculture.
