Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1912 was a river town on the Wisconsin River, built on the white pine lumber trade, with sawmills and lumber yards still central to its economy even as the best nearby timber was running out. Railroads carried logs, lumber, and finished goods in and out of the city, and paper and woodworking firms were gaining ground beside the older mills. Civic and social life revolved around churches, fraternal lodges, and neighborhood institutions serving the working families who made up much of the population. This photograph shows members of the Seventh-day Adventist community, a small faith group that held services and ran outreach in the city, at a time when Wausau was beginning to look beyond the sawmill.
