Ladysmith, in Rusk County in northwestern Wisconsin, was a young lumber-era town in 1912, and its economy still leaned heavily on sawmills and the timber trade that had drawn settlers to the upper Flambeau country. By then the great pine stands had largely been cut, leaving behind stumps and "cutover" land that state boosters and land companies were trying to sell to farmers. Rusk County had been organized only about a decade earlier, in 1901, so the town was still building its courthouse, schools, and civic institutions. For the people who lived there, Ladysmith meant a frontier place in transition, where the lumber payroll was shrinking and farming was becoming the future.
