Cadott, a village in Chippewa County in west-central Wisconsin, took its name from the Cadotte family, early fur traders in the Chippewa country. By 1912 the community depended on the railroad that ran through it and on the farms that had replaced the cutover pine lands left by the lumber boom of the previous decades. Dairying and cheese making were growing in the surrounding countryside, and farm families came into town to trade, ship goods, and sell their produce. Local life centered on the main street, the churches, the schools, and the depot, where people met the trains and watched the town's business come and go. Wisconsin's politics in 1912 were shaped by the Progressive movement, and small towns like Cadott followed those debates over railroads, taxes, and public services closely.
