This 1870 bird's-eye view shows Corry, a town in northwestern Pennsylvania's Erie County, drawn from a high oblique angle so that streets, rail lines, and individual buildings are visible at once. Corry grew quickly during the oil boom of the 1860s and became a railroad junction, and the map captures that mix of industry and transportation in its crowded blocks and tracks. The view was produced by the Chicago lithographers Ruger & Stoner, working from a drawing by Albert Ruger, one of the best-known makers of these panoramic town portraits in the late nineteenth century. Viewers today often use such maps to picture how a town was laid out and what its landmarks looked like just after the Civil War.
