A Stiff Point" shows a dog frozen mid-hunt, holding the rigid pose that gives the title its name, a term sportsmen use for a pointer locking onto the scent of game. The picture dates to about 1902 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landscapes, towns, and everyday life in the early 1900s. It was made as a cyanotype, an early contact-printing process that produces the deep blue tones of a blueprint, and its large size points to a mammoth-plate negative. The print's copyright deposit and its later transfer to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 help trace how such commercial views were preserved.
