The Leonzo Brothers were billed here as "sensational artists" alongside the dog Tiger, who was clearly the star of the act. Posters like this were typical of the American variety and circus stage in the late 1870s, when performers commissioned bold, colorful lithographs to draw crowds to theaters and tents. The New York firm named on the print, the Metropolitan Lithographic Studio, was one of many shops producing such advertising, and its work from this period shows how theatrical promotion relied on eye-catching images and exaggerated claims of spectacle.
