Titled simply "Steady," this large blue-toned print shows a dog, and the title suggests the animal was asked to hold still for the camera. The mammoth-plate format, which used oversized glass negatives, would have captured fine detail in fur and harness. Cyanotype, which yields white lines on a Prussian-blue ground, was a simple and inexpensive process, and it was common for commercial views around 1902. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its many photographs of American towns, scenery and everyday life, issued the print, and its copyright deposit records help date it.
