Two firms are credited on this lithograph: Kellogg & Comstock of Hartford, Connecticut, and D. Needham of Buffalo, New York, a pairing that points to the print's wide distribution across the Northeast. Kellogg & Comstock was one of several American firms producing inexpensive colored lithographs in the 1840s, when such prints were sold in shops and by traveling dealers to households that wanted affordable pictures. Like many prints of the period, this one turns a familiar domestic subject, here a litter of puppies, into an easily read and sentimental image. Its date is an estimate of 1848 to 1850.
