Two puppies, a male and a female, share a single umbrella in this c1914 print, a detail that sets it apart from the other dog pictures on this board. Staged scenes like this, in which animals wore clothes and acted out everyday human moments, were a popular novelty in the early 1900s, when studio photography and picture postcards made such playful images easy to circulate. The humor rests on the contrast between the dogs' steady, unbothered faces and the sweetly sentimental pose of two figures sheltering together from the rain.
