A young puppy stands at a washboard, scrubbing a small bundle of laundry, a chore that was a daily routine in many households before electric washing machines became common. Pictures like this belong to a popular early twentieth-century genre of staged photographs in which dogs were dressed in clothing and posed in ordinary human roles, often for novelty cards and humorous illustrations. The joke depends on the contrast between the animal's serious expression and the very human work it is made to perform. Around 1914, such pictures were widely circulated and offer a useful glimpse of how people amused themselves with pets and domestic life.
