Two White House dogs, Whoopie and Englehurst Gillette, sit for this March 1929 portrait with Robert R. Robinson, a man named in the record. The picture was taken less than a month after Herbert Hoover's inauguration on March 4, 1929, so it captures the household in the first weeks of a new administration. The National Photo Company worked across Washington in the 1920s, and its pictures of officials, visitors and everyday street life give historians a detailed record of the city. Hoover is listed as a subject because the dogs were among the pets kept at the executive residence during his presidency.
