Two pointers stand alert in an open field, their bodies held rigid and their heads turned toward something out of frame, the classic pose that gave the breed its name. Pointers were developed in Britain in the 1600s and 1700s to freeze when they scented game birds, letting the hunter close in for the shot. Images like this one were popular with sporting artists and print publishers, who sold them to gentlemen hunters and kennel owners. Look closely at the set of the tails and the tension in the legs, which show how much control the breed's training demanded.
