Two setters hold a point in tall grass, one foot raised and bodies locked forward toward something hidden in the brush. Setters were bred for this work: they freeze at the scent of game birds so the hunter can move in and flush the quarry. Hunting dogs like these were a common subject for sporting painters and photographers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, who prized the arched necks, feathered tails and rigid stillness that showed a dog's training. Pointing is still the defining pose of the breed, and the picture captures the moment of tension just before the birds rise.
