A young puppy works a saw across a sawhorse, cast as a carpenter's helper in a scene that is meant to look like ordinary human labor. The picture belongs to a popular genre of staged animal photographs from the early 1900s, in which dogs were dressed in clothing and arranged in everyday situations for amusement. Such novelty images circulated widely as cards and prints, and their humor depends on the contrast between the animal's small, earnest body and the adult chore it is performing. The props and the pup's careful stance do most of the storytelling.
