Three puppies sit close together at the base of a wooden fence, with fallen autumn leaves scattered across the ground around them. The group pose gives the picture its appeal: the animals huddle as if waiting for something, and the seasonal setting of dry leaves places the scene in late fall. Photographs of pet dogs like these became common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when inexpensive cameras made candid animal pictures possible for ordinary families. Worth noticing is how the fence and foliage frame the puppies, turning a simple domestic moment into a small study of texture and light.
