Three kittens gather around a feast in this hand-colored lithograph, cast as diners whose mock-solemn table manners are the joke. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that published it around 1871, issued many comic animal scenes like this one, which sold cheaply to middle-class American households and often used cats to satirize human domestic life. The humor depends on viewers recognizing familiar dinner-table rituals, so the kittens read as small people. The print is listed as number 6514 in the firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research in 1983.
