Three kittens sprawl across a tabletop in the aftermath of a meal, their full bellies and slack postures doing most of the storytelling. This hand-colored lithograph was issued by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that dominated American popular printmaking in the later nineteenth century, and it belongs to a long run of sentimental animal scenes the company sold cheaply to households across the country. The print is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of Currier & Ives work, which helps researchers date and identify it. Its humor depends on a familiar domestic joke that Victorian audiences would have enjoyed immediately.
