Edward Penfield's 1896 poster for the May issue of *Harper's* stands out for its pairing of women and cats, the two subjects catalogued for this sheet. Penfield was one of the most prominent American poster designers of the 1890s, when the color lithographed poster became a popular form of advertising in the wake of French artists such as Jules Chéret and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. His work for *Harper's* used flat areas of color, bold outlines, and simplified figures that could be read quickly from across a street. The poster shows how magazine publishers borrowed the energy of street art to sell monthly issues.
