This color poster advertises the July issue of *Harper's*, the New York illustrated monthly published by Harper & Brothers, and its cat subject sets it apart from the magazine's usual portraits and landscapes. Colorful lithographed posters like this were pasted in shops and on city hoardings to draw attention to new issues in the 1890s. Cats were a favorite motif of the decade's illustrators, who often used them to suggest leisure, charm, and domestic comfort. The record dates the piece to about 1898, a period when American magazine art was flourishing.
