Two cats sit side by side in this color poster by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, dated 1894 in the record, and it carries his monogram. Steinlen spent most of his career in Montmartre, where cats wandered the streets and cabarets, and he drew them often for the illustrated magazines and café culture of Paris at the turn of the century. The record also notes that this copy was printed for a 1914 Steinlen exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in London, so it reflects a later printing of an earlier design. That gap between the original date and the exhibition run is worth keeping in mind when reading the piece.
