Steinlen's 1895 color lithograph pairs a young girl with a cat that is plainly pleading for milk, and the cat's begging is the joke that makes the poster work. It advertises sterilized pure milk from Guillot Frères of Montigny-sur-Vingeanne, a small village in the Côte-d'Or, Burgundy. Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was known for his drawings of cats and his scenes of Paris street life, and he brought that affectionate eye to commercial work, at a time when color posters were becoming a major advertising form in France.
