Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer known for his portraits of writers and dancers and his street scenes of San Francisco's Chinatown, turned his camera here to a single cat rather than a person or a crowded street. The gelatin silver print is dated only to the period between 1906 and 1924, when that process was the standard for fine photographic printing. Animal studies like this were popular with early twentieth-century photographers, who used pets to explore light, texture and expression. The Library of Congress holds the print in its Genthe collection, where it has not yet been fully cataloged.
