Barbara Newberry, the young sitter in this gelatin silver print, is pictured with a cat named Buzzer, and the pairing is what sets the image apart from the many other cat portraits on this board. The photograph belongs to the Arnold Genthe Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds a large body of portraits Genthe made in his San Francisco and New York studios in the 1910s. Genthe was known for relaxed, informal sittings that let his subjects look natural rather than posed, and a child with a pet fits that approach well. The date of about 1915 is an estimate in the record, so the exact year remains uncertain.
