Three white kittens tumble through a cluttered Victorian parlor in this hand-colored lithograph, one of the many cat scenes Currier & Ives issued in the early 1870s. The firm, based in New York, sold inexpensive prints to a broad middle-class public, and its sentimental domestic humor, with animals acting out human roles, proved especially popular. Kittens in mischief were a favorite theme, and the bright hand coloring of the era gave such scenes a playful, storybook quality. The print is cataloged in the firm's standard reference, the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives work.
