Little white kittens try their luck at fishing in this Currier & Ives lithograph, turning household pets into figures of comic effort. Published in New York around 1871, the print was colored by hand after printing, a finishing step the firm used to make its inexpensive pictures more appealing. Currier & Ives produced many cat subjects like this one for middle-class parlors, and the firm's catalog raisonné, compiled by Gale Research in 1983, lists this image as number 4043.
