This London etching, published in 1775, sets its satire in Boston, where the spring fighting at Lexington and Concord had just turned the colonial dispute into open war. Its title and named subjects, including the Earl of Bute, Lord Mansfield, Simon Fraser, Master of Lovat, and Alexander Wedderburn, point to a familiar British target: Scottish-born men in politics, the courts, and the army, who were often blamed for Crown policy toward the colonies. Bute had been prime minister and remained a lightning rod for opponents of the king's ministers. The print is worth noticing for how it turns a military confrontation into a commentary on who was responsible for it.
