Ship-building at East Boston, engraved in 1855, shows the waterfront yards that made the district one of the busiest shipbuilding centers on Boston Harbor. The wood engraving by V. Ace appeared in Ballou's Pictorial on May 19, 1855, a Boston illustrated weekly that brought scenes of local industry to readers across the city. In the decades before the Civil War, East Boston's yards turned out clipper ships and other vessels that carried goods and passengers far beyond the harbor. The date and publication details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
