Thomas Nast's "Christmas Eve" shows soldiers and prayer, a pairing that marks it as a wartime image from the 1860s, when the Civil War kept many families apart at the holidays. Nast was the leading illustrator of his day for *Harper's Weekly*, and his sentimental Christmas drawings from those years, which pictured soldiers in camp and their families at home, helped shape how Americans imagined the holiday. This wood engraving was reissued in *Christmas Drawings for the Human Race*, a Harper & Brothers volume published around 1899 that gathered his earlier holiday work. Viewers today may notice how the picture turns a religious observance into a message about home and sacrifice.
