Santa Claus is shown lingering in a child's room on Christmas Eve, waiting for the children to fall asleep before he begins his work. The scene is an engraving by Thomas Nast, the German-born American cartoonist who did much to shape the modern picture of Santa as a jolly, bearded gift-bringer. Nast drew Santa repeatedly for *Harper's Weekly* in the 1860s and 1870s, and this print comes from *Christmas Drawings for the Human Race*, a collection of his holiday pictures published by Harper & Brothers. Its domestic, affectionate tone shows how Nast's images helped turn Christmas Eve into a family ritual.
