Thomas Nast's *Christmas Eve--old faces for young hearts* takes its title from a idea at the center of the holiday: Santa Claus is an old figure whose appeal lies in childlike wonder. Nast first published the scene in 1877, and this engraving was later reprinted in *Christmas Drawings for the Human Race*, a Harper & Brothers volume from 1890. Nast did more than almost any other illustrator of his day to shape the American picture of Santa, through his work for *Harper's Weekly*, so the plate is worth studying as an example of that visual tradition taking hold.
