Among the temperance prints of its era, this color lithograph is distinctive for its title, "Inebriate's Express," which suggests drinking as a journey with a grim destination, while the heading names faith, hope and charity, virtues often shown as angels. Images like this circulated during a period when the temperance movement was growing across the country, and it would soon become more visible in the Woman's Crusade of 1873 and 1874. The sheet came from the New York Lithographing, Engraving & Printing Company, and its copyright was registered to Mrs. Geo. D. Hyde, a reminder that women also took part in the business of producing moral imagery.
