Two rounded arches frame this hallway in the Thomas Jefferson Building, the Library of Congress's main home in Washington. The building opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style, and its interiors were lavishly ornamented with marble, carved detail, and murals meant to celebrate learning. The library it houses grew out of Congress's collection, which was rebuilt in 1815 when Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to replace the books lost when British forces burned the Capitol. The record dates the photograph only approximately, to between 1890 and 1910, so the view likely records the building soon after its completion.
