The Jefferson Building is named for the third president, though the building itself was completed long after his death in 1826, and it houses the Library of Congress in Washington. Its construction began in 1889 and it opened to the public in 1897, a period when the young nation's capital was embracing grand Beaux-Arts architecture. The name nods to Jefferson's own role in the library's origins, since Congress bought his personal book collection after the Library of Congress was burned in 1814. The photograph is a fitting image for a board devoted to Jefferson, linking the statesman to the institution that still carries his legacy.
