The key plan on this sheet lays out the first story of the Jefferson Building, the structure that became the first home of the Library of Congress's new complex in Washington. Its architects, John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, developed the design in the late 1880s, after Congress authorized a separate building to relieve the crowded Capitol. A key plan like this one served as an index, showing how the numbered sections of the larger drawings fit together so readers could locate each room. The building opened in 1897, and this sheet offers a useful view of how its interior was meant to work before construction began.
