A color halftone reproduction of Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Thomas Jefferson, this print copies a canvas held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Stuart, a Rhode Island-born painter best known for his likenesses of George Washington, painted Jefferson in the early 1800s, when Jefferson was at the height of his public career. The title gives 1713 as the birth year, but Jefferson was born in 1743, so the dates are worth checking against other sources. The Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Co., a Boston firm, produced the reproduction around 1929, when printed images of founders and presidents were widely used in schoolbooks and patriotic displays.
