Rembrandt Peale's portrait of Thomas Jefferson, shown here in a color reproduction, is one of the best-known likenesses of the third president. Peale painted it in 1800, the year Jefferson ran against John Adams for the presidency, and the original belongs to the New-York Historical Society. Color photomechanical prints like this one were made in large numbers between about 1890 and 1940, so this copy reflects the period's wide interest in presenting national leaders through familiar paintings. Its value lies in carrying Peale's image of Jefferson, dressed in his ordinary dark clothing, to viewers who would never see the canvas itself.
