The title "Love is the lightest" reads more like a sentiment than a scene, which fits the sentimental tone that Nathaniel Currier often gave his domestic and child-centered lithographs. Published in New York around 1847, this hand-colored print comes from the years when Currier's shop was turning out inexpensive images for a growing middle-class market. Color was usually added by hand, often by workers applying stencils, so no two copies look exactly alike. The catalog number in the record places it among the firm's documented works, and it offers a useful glimpse of how family life was pictured for ordinary buyers before the photograph became common.
