Currier & Ives published "Mama's Darlings" in New York around 1877, and the hand-coloring that a lithograph of this kind received was done by workers who tinted each impression by hand. The title points to the sentimental subject that made the firm's domestic scenes so popular: a mother and her young children presented as the center of the household. Prints like this were sold cheaply and widely, so they offer a useful view of how middle-class American families were pictured in the later nineteenth century. Its catalog entry in the Library of Congress collection places it among the firm's hand-colored lithographs from the 1870s.
