A young girl is the sole focus of this etching, titled simply *Child Study*, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1940. The plate is signed in pencil by Arthur William Heintzelman, an American printmaker who worked in the intaglio tradition. Etching was a popular medium for American artists in the 1930s and 1940s, and the fine lines of the needle allowed artists to capture texture and quiet expression in intimate figure studies like this one. Its title signals a focus on observation over narrative, so the viewer is invited to study the child's face and posture closely.
