Children building snowmen in a winter scene give this 1914 color lithograph its title, *La petite guerre*, or "the little war," a playful phrase that sets a childhood game against the larger conflict that began that year. Edouard Bernard signed the work with the date 1914, and the record lists the Canada Food Board as a sponsor, which places the poster within the wartime effort to rally civilians behind home-front causes. Posters of this period often used everyday scenes like this one to make an appeal feel familiar, and the snowmen the children make are the kind of symbol the subject headings point to.
