Papa's new hat is a family-life genre scene whose title points to a small domestic moment built around a father's new hat and the children reacting to it. Like much of the firm's output, it was published in New York by Currier & Ives, the lithographic house that sold hand-colored sheets to a broad middle-class public from the 1830s into the early 1900s. Its catalog number, 5092, in the 1983 Gale Research catalog raisonné, places it among the many sentimental and humorous scenes of home life that made the firm's prints familiar in American parlors.
