Published as the cover of *Judge* on October 30, 1920, *Cutting a Shine* takes its title from the slang phrase for showing off or putting on airs. J.D. Gleason's drawing casts children in the roles of grown-ups, playing at the manners and pretensions of adult life, a comic idea well suited to the weekly's wry humor. Color halftones like this one were how magazines reproduced artwork in the 1920s, bringing a cover's bright palette to a wide readership. The joke rests on the contrast between the children's serious bearing and the grown-up pose they are trying to strike.
