Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs to a wide public for much of the nineteenth century, issued this hand-colored print of a child named Little Sarah around 1874. The record gives no further detail about the sitter or the scene, so its sentimental appeal rests on the image itself: a small girl presented as the center of a household's affection. Prints of this kind were hand-tinted in workshops, which is why similar sheets vary in color from one copy to another. The catalog number in the Gale Research raisonné allows researchers to trace this sheet among the firm's large output of domestic and childhood subjects.
