Little Brothers" takes its subject from its title: a pair of young boys, presented as a small study in affection between siblings. The print was issued by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that dominated American popular printmaking in the later nineteenth century. This example is a lithograph colored by hand, a process in which workers added color to each impression, often following stencil-like guides. Scenes of children and home life were among the firm's most popular subjects, sold cheaply to families who wanted sentimental images for the parlor or nursery.
