Little Manly" takes its name from a boy's character, and the title itself is the clearest guide to what the print sets out to show. Published in New York around 1874, it is a hand-colored lithograph from Currier & Ives, the firm that sold inexpensive genre scenes of everyday American life to a wide middle-class market. Colorists often worked in batches on each impression, so no two copies look exactly alike. The print is catalogued as number 3961 in the firm's 1983 catalog raisonné, a standard reference for researchers tracing its subjects and variants.
