Sand dunes rising across the floor of the Carson Desert in western Nevada are the subject of this albumen print, which appears as plate 108 in the report of the Fortieth Parallel survey. The survey, led by geologist Clarence King, mapped the territory along the 40th parallel in the late 1860s, and its photographs were meant to document terrain as well as rock formations. Timothy H. O'Sullivan, who worked as the survey's photographer, made the image, and his emptiness-filled landscapes give a sense of how difficult the Great Basin was for travelers and surveyors. The dunes show how shifting sand could bury and reshape the desert floor.
